HENRY toolkit with the Glugs
HENRY has captured the Glugs, a family of animals who strive to build a healthy community together on Glug Island. They illustrate the HENRY toolkit in a colourful and imaginative way, and help to engage young children in efforts to adopt a healthier family lifestyle. The youngest member of the Glugs is Baby Henry who is well looked after by the rest of the gang.
The toolkit includes:
- 3 colourful story books that transmit messages on what babies may need when they cry; watching TV in moderation; and the benefits of family mealtimes.

-
Let’s Go Shopping - a game that focuses on foods that belong in our shopping baskets.
-
Steps in Growing chart - A wallchart that links babies’ signs of hunger and fullness with helpful tips on foods to try, and play at different stages of development.
-
Balancing Your Plate - A placemat for families that illustrates the appropriate size plate for a toddler and a guide to balancing what the family eats.
-
Family reward charts and stickers - For families to use to encourage themselves to make positive changes.
-
How big is a portion? - a chart that provides a guide to portion sizes for young children.
-
Food and activity diary - for use with families when it is helpful to have a record of how much a child is eating.
-
Ball and game ideas - to encourage active play from a very young age.

The HENRY handbook
Tackling Childhood Obesity with HENRY is a core text for practitioners who are encouraging young families to adopt a healthier lifestyle. It outlines the evidence base underpinning this work, explores the Family Partnership Approach and provides key information. It is provided to all participants attending HENRY courses. The book is due to be published by the Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association in December 2008, and may be purchased through their website.
Tuning in to Mealtimes DVD
One of HENRY’s key messages relates to helping parents and carers feed babies and young children in a responsive way, so ensuring that they are not over- or under-fed. The Tuning in to Mealtimes DVD is designed for practitioners, and shows how to tell when a baby is hungry or full, and how to establish mealtimes that encourage healthy attitudes to eating.
